News and Comments

The ninth reunion was held on  5 October 2013; total attendance was around 30. During the afternoon, by prior arrangement with the Principal, Mark Silverman, a number of OTs toured parts of Lambeth College, 45 South Side, which occupies the site of the former South Lodge.  The College houses the memorial, rededicated in 2009, to the 54 former pupils who lost their lives during the Second World War, and the pupil honours boards for 1951-68 (see also relevant paragraph below).

The 2014 reunion will be held on Saturday 4 October; .

Vice-President:  Jeff Green, Management Committee Chairman, was pleased to announce at the 2013 reunion that distinguished lawyer and OT Michael  Caplan, QC (1964-71), had accepted an invitation to serve as the Association's first Vice-President.  The Committee's recommendation was formally ratified at the last AGM, enabling Michael to take up the rôle from 1 April 2014.  Jimmy Hill continues to serve as our President.

2015 AGM:  to be held at 2pm on Saturday 21 March; venue to be announced..

Annual subscriptions 2014: as advised in newsletter 22 (April 2013), it was agreed at the last AGM that payment of the appropriate fee - £10 for Full members and £6 for Associates - would be due from 1 January 2014. The deadline for receipt of subscriptions was 1 June 2014, but any former members wishing to re-apply are most welcome to do so by contacting Ted Hayward in the first instance.

"Henry Thornton Award": the Management Committee has agreed that, to foster an "academic" link with Lambeth College and Lambeth Academy (which occupy between them virtually the whole of the former HTS site), an annual award of £100 be made to each institution, for presentation to one nominated pupil for specific achievements, the latter criteria being entirely at the discretion of the College and Academy.  The Association's award is for three years in the first instance, from 2010 (recently extended for a further year, to the end of 2013), and is in the form of book vouchers.

The initial presentation was made at Lambeth College's graduation ceremony, held at Battersea Arts Centre on Saturday 13 November 2010. The recipient was Georgi Kovachev, from Bulgaria, who came to the UK in 2009 to study his A levels.  He is in the Sixth Form and is now applying to take a Business and Marketing degree course at university.  This photograph shows Georgi receiving the award from Ted Hayward, Association Secretary, and Virginia Waterhouse, one of the College Governors:

The award certificate is pictured below, with a photo, taken later at Lambeth College, of Georgi with OT Mike Surridge (1947-52).  Behind them is one of the HTS pupil honours boards (see also following item).

Lambeth Academy's own  award was presented by Mike Surridge at its Foundation Year [2004] Celebration marking the completion of their studies by pupils comprising the  first Year 7 intake; the event was held at the Academy, Elms Road, SW4, on Saturday 2 July 2011. The selected student was Gazmir Ujkaj, who plans to read Economics at university, and he received the award for his "contribution to community cohesion".  A copy of the certificate appears below.

Details of subsequent awards to nominated Academy and College students will be included in the newsletter.

Pupil honours boards:  the five boards covering the period 1918-50 inclusive are now back on display at Lambeth Academy, Elms Road, in their new "home", the Sixth Form study area. To show the layout, one photo, of the set as originally housed in the Academy's conference room, has been posted in the Pupils (2) gallery.  The remaining entries, for 1951-68, are listed on the large composite board now wall-mounted in the meeting room at the adjacent Lambeth College, South Side.  (Also in Pupils (2) is a transcribed list of names and years of all the pupils concerned.  Click on Memorabilia on the Home page menu to access this and the other  galleries.)

WW2 Memorial:  it has not yet been possible to trace any surviving relatives (apart from Peter Wright) of the pupils named on the plaque.  If you are in fact related, or know someone who is (or might be), please let Ted Hayward know by submitting any relevant information to him via the contact form. November 2012 update: the text of the memorial page has been amended to include the name of another OT, Charles John Allwright, whose name was omitted from the original plaque; this information has been provided by Dr Jack Allwright, his nephew.

Former Staff:   pass the word to Ted if you know of any ex-staff  who might be interested in membership of the Association, or at least in learning more about its existence and work.
